A partir disso Harry é introduzido no mundo mágico, onde ele descobre que seus pais não morreram em um acidente de carro, como seus tios o faziam acreditar, mas foram assassinados por um poderoso bruxo das trevas chamado Lord Voldemort. Felizmente, Lord Voldemort não conseguiu matar Harry, deixando-o apenas com uma cicatriz em forma de raio na testa. Ter sobrevivido ao ataque tornou Harry famoso entre os bruxos, dando a ele a alcunha de "O Menino Que Sobreviveu".
